About Danish Wine

The Kingdom of Denmark was accepted by the European Union as a commercial wine region on the 1st of August, 2000. Prior to this milestone, production of grape-wine was only legal for personal use. Members of "Association of Danish Wine Producers" have stubbornly documented since 1993 that the production of distinguished Danish wines is an actual possibility rather than just a dream.

The European Union’s approval of commercial wine production in the year 2000 opened the door to a brave new world: Now, the public could taste Danish wines, starting from the vintage of 2001. In this year, two Danish winemakers inaugurated the Danish wine market. The vintage was swiftly sold out. In the vintage of 2002, six Danish wineries were represented. In 2003, the number was seven, and it steadily increased to eight in the following year.

Today, in 2020, there are approximately 100 Danish commercial wineries.

Chronology of Quality

Since 2001, Skærsøgaard Vin has been able to present five different types of wine annually: Red wine, rosé, white wine, dessert wine, and sparkling wine. Since then, spirits, fruit wine, fortified wine, and an organic segment have been conceived.

Since 2006, our grape wines have been assigned the quality designation “Protected Geographical Indication” (PGI). The Kingdom of Denmark is divided into four regions: Jutland, Funen, Zealand, and Bornholm. Our wines are marked with “Regional wine from Jutland”, which means that they have passed an analytical and sensory test prior to their release.

Since 2018, our sparkling wines have received the quality approval “Protected Designation of Origin”, which is affiliated with the wine region and appellation of DONS.
